Should I Use A Walker For My Baby?

adminUncategorized

Should I use a walker for my baby is a question often asked by parents. Walkers are often considered by parents as useful devices. It creates some free time for parents as babies are momentarily  occupied. Parents are also under the impression they help babies to start developing walking.

What age can a walker be used?

A baby should be able to hold their head up steady and their feet should touch the floor. Walkers are generally designed for babies between 4-16 months, and this is dependant on the babies size, strength and development.

The following  should be considered when deciding to use a walker for your baby :

1. Injuries:

Injuries may happen as your baby can move fast and can fall down stairs, crash into bench corners, or get their toes squashed by the wheels. Your baby will be able to reach at a different height.
2. Developmental delays:
Research has shown babies who use walkers have delayed development. Babies sat, crawled and walked LATER compared to those who did not use a walker. They also scored lower on mental and motor development (1).
3. Walking issues:

Walkers train babies to walk on their toes.

SUMMARY: Current research does not support using a walker

The American Academy of Paediatrics does not recommend the use of walkers due to research supporting the delays in sitting, crawling and walking.
