Over 7 years of age a child can use an adult seat belt, however it depends on their size (adult seat belts are designed for a height of at least 145cm) and the following factors:
. The child is able to sit with their back firmly against the seat.
. The child is able to bend their knees comfortably over the front of the seat cushion.
. The child is able to sit with the seat belt across their mid-shoulder.
. The child is able to sit with the lap belt across the top of their thighs.
. The child is able to remain in this position of the entire trip.
If a child over the age of 7 years is using an adult seat and a police officer thinks they are not sitting in the seat properly or wearing the belt properly then they can issue a fine.
